A modern move is to drape fabric loosely over a decorative rod or pole or through brackets, in a nod to conventional valances and swags. Often, swags (sometimes called scarves because they resemble those sweeping women’s accessories worn at the throat) serve no function, but they earn their keep by looking dramatic (see Figure 16-3).

Supporting roles

Hardware for curtains has always played a vital supporting role. Increasingly hardware vies for attention, if not stardom. Certainly, if the rod (and perhaps rings) and finials are to be visible, consider their style as an important part of the overall curtain design. The variety of styles related to historic styles and periods, as well as Contemporary design, is almost limitless. Finding the perfect curtain rod is only a matter of time. Because rods rest on movable brackets, they adjust easily to any height (and width) called for in your design.

Figure 16-3: A simple swag of fabric adds a touch of softness to the hard lines of a plain window and a bit of color, pattern, and drama to a natural focal point.
